About the Tour

Portugal earns its reputation among serious riders the hard way — road by road. The N222 between Peso da Régua and Pinhão was named the best driving road in the world. The Serra da Estrela has mountain passes that most international riders never reach. The schist village roads above Lousã see almost no traffic. Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park, has terrain that rewards those who venture beyond the coastline.

This tour covers all of it. Eight riding days through the interior of Northern and Central Portugal — the Serra da Estrela’s switchbacks, the Douro Valley’s terraced vineyards, the remote plateau of Trás-os-Montes, and the granite mountain roads of Peneda-Gerês — guided by Tiago Sousa Lopes, one of Portugal’s most experienced motorcycle tour guides, who has spent his career learning every corner of these roads.

The itinerary is designed to show riders the Portugal that exists beyond the tourist trail — the villages, the valleys, and the passes that make this one of the most rewarding motorcycle destinations in Europe. Small group, expert guide, premium accommodations, all meals included.

Check out also the Classic BMW Motorcycle Tour of Tuscany. It starts right at the end of this tour — a unique opportunity to follow the roads of Portugal with the roads of Tuscany, on a “/2” BMW.

Schedule

Select a date above to see schedule based on tour dates.

  • Day 0: Arrival in Porto. Meet your guide and fellow riders at the Meet & Greet, followed by a Welcome Dinner at a traditional Portuguese restaurant in the heart of the city.
  • Day 1: Porto to Luso — The first riding day heads south through the green Minho countryside, climbing into the foothills of the Serra do Buçaco. Luso sits at the edge of a centuries-old national forest that Napoleon’s troops were forbidden to cut. A gentle opener that sets the tone for what follows.
  • Day 2: Luso to Lousã — The roads tighten as the route climbs into the mountains above Lousã, threading through schist villages perched on hillsides with almost no traffic. This is the interior of Portugal that most visitors never find — and the riding reflects it.
  • Day 3: Lousã to Serra da Estrela — The landscape shifts dramatically as the route enters Portugal’s highest mountain range. Proper switchbacks, altitude, and views that extend for extraordinary distances on a clear day. The Serra da Estrela is not a pass-through on this tour — it is a destination.
  • Day 4: Serra da Estrela to Colmeal — A second day in the Serra, descending through the eastern foothills toward Colmeal. The granite plateaus and glacial valleys give way to the quieter rolling terrain of the upper Douro watershed. One of the most visually varied days on the route.
  • Day 5: Colmeal to Douro Valley — The route drops north into the Douro, approaching through the vineyards of the upper valley — a perspective most riders never take. The terraced slopes, the river below, the schist hillsides: the Douro earns its UNESCO World Heritage designation from every angle.
  • Day 6: Douro Valley loop — A full day in the valley, built around the N222 — the 27-kilometer stretch between Peso da Régua and Pinhão with 93 bends and the river on one side. The day is designed to be savored, not covered.
  • Day 7: Douro Valley to Peneda-Gerês — The route heads northwest into Portugal’s only national park, where granite mountains, river valleys, and ancient village roads converge. The park’s terrain is wilder and quieter than anywhere else on the itinerary.
  • Day 8: Peneda-Gerês to Porto — The final riding day descends from the park back to Porto, closing the loop. The farewell dinner that evening is the right way to end a week on roads like these.
  • Day 9: Departure from Porto.

  • Morning departures are typically 9:00 or as advised
  • Afternoon arrivals normally leave time to relax before dinner
